Chapter 4 - Surprises Aren't That Fun

Ezio's eyes flew open, he abruptly sat up. He looked around the room, bewildered. A sharp pain shot through his back. He gasped, laying back down. He squeezed his eyes shut, waiting for the pain to disappear. Where am I? he thought, slowly opening his eyes. The room didn't look familiar. It most definitely didn't look like Leonardo's room. This room was small, and lacked furniture.

He tried to think of what happened. He couldn't remember. Where is Leonardo? Another question. He started thinking of all the worst possible scenarios. He hoped Leonardo wasn't hurt... Or worse. He forced himself into a sitting position, ignoring the pain. He swung both his legs over the side of the bed. He stood up. The pain was worse. He clenched his teeth together, and stumbled towards the door. He cautiously opened the door, and peeked out. There were stairs leading to a downstairs area. A voice caught his attention.

"What if he is not well enough to travel by tomorrow? He hasn't even woken up, yet! It's been 2 days..." The voice explained, sadness in his voice. The voice was Leonardo! Ezio smiled, knowing his friend was okay.

"Let's go check on him now." A woman's voice said. Rosa? he wondered to himself. He quickly retreated, shutting the door. Ezio decided to make their visit interesting. He grinned to himself as he viewed the open window. He moved hastily towards the window, he swung himself out, he held onto the ledge of the window, and stayed in a hanging position. The pain was easing up, thankfully. Ezio listened as he heard the door open. He peeked over in the window, he saw Leonardo and Rosa's face turn to horror. He quickly ducked his head back down, hiding a laugh.

"Where... Where is he?!" Leonardo yelled out.

Ezio lurched himself up, grabbing the top of the window. He swung himself into the room, almost knocking right in to Leonardo. Rosa and Leonardo both screamed loudly. Rosa jumped out of the way, pulling out a blade. Ezio landed softly on the ground, and burst out in laughter. Leonardo stood there, shock on his face.

"Figlio di una puttana!" Rosa screamed, smacking Ezio playfully on the shoulder. Ezio grinned.

"Good to see you, Rosa." Ezio smiled. Rosa shook her head, laughing. Leonardo shifted his eyes to Rosa, and Ezio. Still stunned.

"Oh... Mi dispiace, Leonardo." Ezio apologized, still a grin on his face. Leonardo raised his eyebrows.

"Do you take pleasure in scaring me?!" Leonardo questioned, pushing Ezio. Leonardo sat down on the edge of the bed. His heart still pounding.

"Am I really that frightening?" Ezio chuckled, sitting down beside Leonardo. Leonardo nodded, and turned away. Ezio looked at Rosa, and smiled. Rosa rolled her eyes, and crossed her arms.

"Ezio... It is rather frightening when an injured man suddenly disappears! Then... Out of nowhere, a man flies through the window!" Rosa scolded.

"I was just lightening the mood. At least you know I'm not dead, or anything." Ezio said, trying to defend his prank. Leonardo groaned.

"If you ever do that again, I swear to god..." Leonardo threatened. Ezio laughed, wrapping an arm around the painter. Leonardo ignored his gesture. He stood up, leaving Ezio alone on the bed.

"So... You are feeling fine, then?" Leonardo asked, a little more happier.

Ezio shrugged and nodded. "I guess so."

"Ezio... We have to go to Monteriggoni." Leonardo said quietly. Ezio's head perked up, he looked at the painter. A confused look plastered on his face.

"Why is that?" Ezio asked, curiously.

"Well... It would be safer." Rosa piped in. Ezio slowly nodded.

"That is actually an excellent idea. The guards know you've been with me, Leonardo... They'll kill you to. We should leave soon." Ezio explained, a rush in his voice.

"We'll leave tomorrow?" Leonardo suggested. Ezio nodded.

"Ha! Perfect. They wouldn't suspect a thing! You've done well, madam. Grazie for this! You're helping the Templar order greatly." The man thanked, happiness in his voice. The woman bowed, a sly grin on her face.

"I'll tell them that the plan is in motion. They'll be leaving shortly." The woman grinned, turning to leave the building.

The man smiled to himself.

"Oh, Ezio... How I can't wait to see the life drained from your eyes."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sun was high in the sky when Ezio finally convinced Leonardo they should leave. Leonardo seemed reluctant to leave Venice.

"Ezio! Could I please just go check my workshop?" Leonardo pleaded, grabbing Ezio's arm, pulling him away from the ship about to leave.

"Leonardo! We can't! There's probably guards all around it." Ezio tried to explain. Leonardo frowned. Ezio sighed.

"Tell the ship to wait... I'll be back." Ezio gave in. Leonardo smiled at him. Ezio started to walk away towards Leonardo's workshop. He could hear walking behind him. He turned around to see Leonardo following.
"No... Leo. Wait here. I don't want you getting hurt." Ezio ordered. Leonardo looked upset again.

"Fine... Be quick." Leonardo sighed, turning back to the boat. Ezio frowned, he didn't like seeing Leonardo upset, but it was for his own good.

Ezio ran through the streets, dodging citizens as fast as he could. He saw Leonardo's workshop. He used eagle vision to look around the building. Eagle vision was a strange gift in which he inherited. He saw no red around the building. Meaning no guards. He sneaked up to the workshop, pushing open the door. He went inside. His face turned to horror once he saw the workshop. The bodies of the guards were gone, but the blood wasn't. Things were destroyed, or broken. Ezio looked away, sadness washing over him. It was a good thing Leonardo didn't have to see this. Ezio sighed, and took one last look at the workshop. A crumpled piece of paper caught Ezio's eye. He slowly walked over. He bent down, and picked it up. He opened up the piece of paper. His eyes widened in surprise, and a smile appeared on his face.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monteriggoni came into view. A small town with a wall protecting it from possible enemies. Leonardo and Ezio rode on two horses to the gates. Ezio smiled at the familiar place. Leonardo looked at it curiously, with an artistic mind.

"Very interesting..." Leonardo smiled, examining it from afar.

"My Uncle has been trying to get some money to improve it." Ezio explained, shrugging. Leonardo curtly nodded.

They walked up the steps to the villa. Leonardo looked around curiously. Ezio looked over at Leonardo, and smiled. Leonardo always saw things a different way. They walked up to the villa doors. Ezio knocked twice, and then entered. Leonardo followed. They ended up in a large square room. There was white tile, and columns holding up the second floor. There were a large white staircase opposite from them.

"Who is there?" called a female voice. A girl poked her head out from one of the rooms. Her face lit up, and she ran to Ezio.

"Claudia!" Ezio beamed, hugging his little sister. Leonardo smiled at her.

"You must be Leonardo, right?" Claudia grinned.

"It is wonderful to meet you, Claudia." Leonardo greeted, bowing.

"I will tell Uncle Mario you are here! Ezio, you should go see mother." Claudia told Ezio, leaving the room to find Uncle Mario. Ezio frowned, and looked up the stairs.

"Something wrong?" Leonardo asked. Ezio sighed, and slowly shook his head.

"I hope she's okay. Last time I saw her she wasn't even talking. She can't believe that they are gone." Ezio frowned, his voice thick with sadness. They went up the stairs, going to Maria's room. The door was open. Ezio peeked his head in the room. Maria was talking to somebody. A young girl by the look of it.

"You look beautiful, tesoro. Your sister will approve." Maria said in a motherly voice. Ezio looked at her curiously. Ezio and Leonardo both walked into the room. Maria jumped, and looked back to see who was there. Her eyes widened in surprise.

"Ezio! Leonardo!" She chimed, jumping up from the edge of the bed. She hurried over to the two men. She wrapped her arms around both of them, hugging Leonardo and Ezio tightly. Ezio smiled.

"I missed you, mother." Ezio smiled. Maria placed a kiss on Ezio's cheek.

"I missed you too, son. And Leonardo! So great to see you again." Maria grinned. She looked back over to the young girl.

"This is Arabella. Arabella, this is my son Ezio, and a wonderful painter named Leonardo." Maria introduced the three. Ezio bowed his head slightly, and smiled. The girl looked at them curiously.

"Ezio... Uncle Mario has something important to tell you. It is almost dinner time. We will explain everything there. And please, Ezio... Don't be too surprised, and don't get angry." Maria said sternly. Ezio's head perked up, and he stared at Maria. Confusion washed over him.

"What do you mean...?" Ezio asked, knowing he wouldn't get an answer. Maria smiled, and waved them off.

Ezio and Leonardo exited Maria's room. Ezio groaned, and they both went down the stairs towards the dining area. Leonardo stopped Ezio before they went in.

"Who is Arabella?" Leonardo asked, tilting his head to the side.

"I have no idea." Ezio admitted.

The Auditore family, and Leonardo all took their seats at the table. Along with four other people.

"Before we explain everything, let us introduce everyone." Mario announced. He stood up, walking over to the first girl.

"This is Letizia," He placed his hand on the girls shoulder. She looked up at Mario, and smiled. He moved on to the older looking boy sitting next to her. "This is Gabriele," He gestured towards the boy, moving onto the children. "And this is Arabella, and Lazzaro." Mario finished, smiling.

"Oh! Right. I should probably introduce these two men to all of you. This is Ezio, my nipote. And this is Leonardo Da Vinci. He's a friend of the family." Mario continued. Leonardo smiled.

"Very wonderful to meet you all." Leonardo said, referring to the four strangers. Letizia smiled at Leonardo. Letizia had long black curly hair, and emerald eyes. Her skin was rather pale. Leonardo thought she was beautiful, even though he obviously had no interest. He glanced at Ezio, to see his reaction. Ezio was perfectly still. His face was showing no emotion. Leonardo might of noticed a flicker of anger in his eyes. Mario moved around the table back to his chair. He sat down.

"Now... Ezio. You're probably wondering what this is all about." Mario spoke loudly, looking at Ezio. Ezio gave a slight nod, and his eyes shot over to the four people, then went back to look at Mario.

"Ezio... Your father had I guess... Sort of a training going on for them." Mario explained. Ezio's face turned cold, and rough looking. Leonardo sensed anger.

"He was training them to become assassin's, Ezio." Mario quickly finished, also sensing Ezio's frustration. Ezio's eyes went dark, and he looked mad.

"What are you applying?" Ezio hissed. Maria looked upset by Ezio's reaction.

"Ezio, do not be angry. I want you to train them. Giovanni would of wanted it! He started this, and he wants you to finish it. You can't always control it, Ezio! You're training them, and you aren't getting out of it!" Mario half yelled. Leonardo was surprised by Mario's outburst. Ezio looked a bit upset by what Mario had said, but he quickly hid that emotion, and he jumped up from the table. His chair fell over, and he stormed out of the room.

"Cazzo..." Ezio heard Mario say, as he left the room.

Ezio went out of the Villa, into the outside. He was angry. How could Mario expect him to train four people into assassin's?! He had other work to finish! He was still trying to avenge his father, and brothers. He was doing his fathers work, already. Ezio took off running. He ran down the steps, and launched himself up to a nearby building. He pulled himself onto the roof. His back ached, and it was still stinging. Anyways, how could he train them if he was already injured?

He walked along the rooftops. People from below gave him strange looks, and commented on what he was doing. Ezio started to think of what to do. Should he leave? It's not like Mario would track him down. Leonardo was still there, though. He couldn't leave Leonardo behind.

He looked up at the wall surrounding the town. A nearby ladder caught his attention. He climbed up the ladder onto the wall. He sat down on the ledge, watching the sun go down.

"Vorrei che tu fossi qui." Ezio whispered, as the sun disappeared, leaving Monteriggoni in darkness.
